Our Elders


Canyon View Church is led by a Governing Board consisting of the Senior Pastor and six Elders. 

Scott Smith

Scott was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan. After moving often with Chevron and Exxon (Italy, Singapore and Korea) and a couple of times as a traveling spouse (London & Toronto), Scott and his wife, Lois, moved to the Bitterroot Valley in 2009 and began attending Canyon View Church.  Scott has a heart for, and had been active with missions and youth. Scott was elected by church members in January, 2016 to serve on the Elder Board.

Beau Johnson

Beau Johnson currently serves at Canyon View Church on the Elder’s Board, is the church Treasurer and is the Financial Peace Coordinator. He is married to Rhonda Johnson and has two daughters, Chloe and Layla. Beau serves as a certified Public Accountant and certified Valuation Analyst. He holds a Master’s degree in Accountancy and a BA degree in Accounting and Finance. Beau is an active member of Rotary, including past treasurer. He loves to mountain bike, backpack, fish and hunt.

Mark Cartwright

Mark Cartwright was born in Pasadena California. He has a wife, Kate, four children and 2 grandchildren. Marc has served as an Electrician/Electrical Contractor for 38 years and is now retired. He also served as the Men’s Ministry Director, on the Elder Board, and School Board of Directors in California. Marc and Kate moved to the Bitterroot in 2012 and he now serves on the Elder Board at Canyon View Church. His hobbies include: On/Off road motorcycling and ATV, shooting and sporting clays.

Ryan Oster

Ryan Oster







Ryan was raised in the Bitterroot Valley. He is married to Heather and has two boys. Ryan has attended Canyon View Church since 2006 and has served as an elder since 2011. Ryan has also served on the worship team and as a “Life Group” Leader.

Dan Altschwager

Dan was born in Polson, raised in Great Falls, and moved to the Bitterroot Valley in 1997. He is married to Kristen and has two daughters. Dan has attended Canyon View Church since 2006 and previously served as a deacon at Canyon View Church from 2007 to 2011.  Dan enjoys spending time with his family and friends, as well as hunting, fishing, backpacking, and most other outdoor activities.

Don Davis

Don was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area in California.  He spent 9 years active duty in the Army and  then 24 years in federal law enforcement.  Don and his wife, Laura, have been married for over 48 years.  They have two married children and four grandchildren.  They moved to the Bitterroot Valley after retiring in 2002. Don’s favorite pastimes include visiting their children and grandchildren, fishing, hunting and hiking.  Don and Laura joined Canyon View Church in 2002.  Don served as an Elder from 2003 to 2013 and was elected back to the Board in 2017.
